An Innovative Fusion of Global Sounds and Modern Genres Paired with Stunning Visual Art
Chris Lawer aka Whitsand is a pioneering British artist known for his innovative approach to music and visual art.
With Whitsand, he explores the intersections of Malian, Senegalese, Indian, Middle Eastern, and Cuban voices, instruments, and rhythms, masterfully blended with house, jazz, and funk elements.
He draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of musical giants including early Talking Heads, Brian Eno, St Germain, Damon Albarn, Youssou N'Dour, John Coltrane, and the pioneering sounds of early 70s Malian music.
The result is his debut album, Waja, that is both a tribute to these influences and a bold foray into uncharted musical and visual territory.
Complementing this musical exploration are a series of vibrant animated videos inspired by mid-century artists Milton Avery, Peter Lanyon, and Robert Motherwell, and Howard Finster’s folk art paintings.
